[Kifri] is situated at the base of some hills, from which extends a vast plain, now called a desert, occupied by Arab shepherds, who pasture innumerable flocks of sheep. The great number of canals intersecting each other, the work of former days, sufficiently attest to the once populousness of the region and to the extents of its cultivation. Wood, 1872, p 68
